Explanation about Sea Turtles

Last week in Literacy, we have been writing about Explanations. I wrote one about Sea Turtles.

Title: Sea Turtles
Date: 2 / 08 / 201

Sea Turtles have existed since the Jurassic. They have been here for 150 Million years. They have survived through the challenges of the eons, and the dinosaurs.

First, an adult female turtle lays its eggs in where she dug a hole to put the eggs there and protects them from threats. Its eggs feels leathery, and is sized and looks like white, ping-pong balls. Out of 1000 eggs being laid, roughly 20% will never hatch. Adults breed for 2 decades, which is 20 years.

A small sea turtle can be about the size of your palm. Unfortunately, 50% who reach the surf will perish. 400 baby turtles reach the water. Along their way to the water, they face danger or threats, such as crabs, seagulls, raccoons, and debris (rubbish).

A new host of predators such as; dolphins, sharks, sea birds, fishes, and mostly, killer whales, are also waiting for the sea turtles. Only 20 hatchlings (baby turtles) make it to the adult.

After many years, they will grow in size. After approximately 2 decades of age, they will be old enough to breed. Of those that began from eggs in the beach, now less than -10% remain. Some turtles suffer with chemicals in the sea, which caused their survival rate drop to 1% or less, and that made the sea turtles overwhelmed. Now there are only seven remaining species of sea turtles; Loggerhead, Kemp’s Ridley, Olive Ridley, Hawksbill, Flatback, and Leatherback. Sea turtles are now endangered. There used to be millions of sea turtles in the world, but now there’s less than a million.

That was a sad journey of growing up as a turtle since they suffer from many threats and they have to risk it just to make it to the adult, or just to survive. 4,600 - which means 90% - of turtles die each year.
I like how you have a lot of information for each paragraph I also like how you have got a lot of punctuation

I like how all of your sentences are interesting and simple I also like how you set out everything.

I think you have to work on to try and not write so much.

Novel Study

Novel Study

This week in Literacy, we're gonna be learning about what a narrative (novel) is, about characters, and questioning. A narrative is a Fiction or a Fairy Tale. It has a problem, and a solution too. You also need to put a setting where the scene happened. At the end, you also can put a conclusion. It also needs to have characters. Characters needs to have names, voice, and talent. The novel also needs the main character. What is questioning? Questioning is like what good readers do which is questioning themselves as they're reading. It's also like asking questions before reading and during reading.

Learning about Matariki

What we have been doing in 2 weeks for Literacy

In 2 weeks in Literacy, we have been learning about Matariki. I learned that Matariki has 6 sisters and it is celebrated at the end of Autumn which is the Winter season. I found it out interesting doing the Matariki Activities like the Word Search, Mix and Match and Fact or Fiction because we needed to write and draw stuff about Matariki. I found it hard doing the Matariki Crossword because we needed to put the words that we've found in Maori.

Paper Aeroplanes - Measurement

Paper Aeroplanes - Measurement

In Maths I have been learning about Measurement. I have been learning how to estimate and measure. I made a paper plane. My teacher marked out a runway with a measuring tape. First, I had to estimate how far my plane can go. I estimated 1.5 m, It actually flew 2 m. My second throw I estimated 3 m, it actually flew 2.90 meters. I found hard making the paper aeroplanes because we needed to follow the directions that is shown and it was kinda hard. I enjoyed flying the paper aeroplanes and estimating how long it will go.

Bird Feeders (STEM Technology)

BIRD FEEDERS

This term in S.T.E.M, we have been learning about Bird Feeders so we can gather some birds in our school by feeding them.

What steps have we taken in class to aid our learning?

-We planned on how and what we are going to do for next week, which is our Building time, so we don't need to think about it when we are building.
-When it was time to build, we knew what to do because we planned about it. We built a bird feeder made of wood that is shaped cylinders, plastic containers, and string.

-Then, after that we need to put it on a branch of a tree so birds can see and then we can gather some birds around our school.

I found creating the plan challenging because we can't make our own slideshows because we don't have enough time and we really need cooperation.

I found making the bird feeders  enjoyable because it was kind of hard making it but it's also fun and we needed to put some effort on it so we enjoyed making the bird feeders.

Spencer Park Trip

Spencer Park Trip

Being in Spencer Park was fun. It was fun because we played a lot. We also did some fun activities like; Going to the beach and making a sand castle, playing in the zip line, laying and spinning the spinning thing, having a race in the sand, etc. It was really fun spending some time outside because it was healthy for us and it improves our physical skills and creativity. It wasn't just fun, because some activities were challenging and you need to do your best and put effort to it. But the main thing that you need to do is just have fun and enjoy while being there in the trip.

Using Our People Powers - Make Their Day

Using Our People Powers - Make Their Day

Today we talked about how we can make people's days.

During this week I will make people's day by:

1) Making them smile.

2) Include them to anything like games and conversations if they're alone.

3) Compliment them.

4) Greet them if you see them.

5) Help them if they're stuck or if they need help.

I will catch up with you next week to let you know how I got on.

Did I make their day?

I did make them smile, because I helped them and I greet them whenever I see them.

We (Shreya, Angela and I) included Mereka on our games and conversations and we became friends.

I complimented people on times that they need to be complimented.

I greet people and put a smile on my face when they pass by me.

I also helped my group mates do our project for S.T.E.M to finish our bird feeder.

I really feel proud of myself of what I did just to make their day.

KALLS Time Travel Slideshow

Time Travel KALLS

This week in Maths, we have been learning about Time Travel. We (The KALLS which is the mixed names of us, K stands for Kristian, A-Angie, L-Lily H, L-Logan JK, and S for Shreya) have been busy doing a slideshow about Time Travel. I found it out easy doing some maths like adding and meausring. And I found it out hard when I was trying to find some pictures.

My feelings about the fallen soldiers

Do you feel the same?

Every ANZAC day is a Memorial Day for the brave and fallen soldiers like; George Wallace Bollinger who died for the country that didn’t trust him, and Athol Hudson who got killed in action, and Daisy Platts-Mills who gave up private practice to become the first woman medical officer of the Public Service Commission. They died for their country. We should always remember them. I have mixed range of emotions. One is sad, because they died for us. Then, angry, because they got killed. Next is, proud because they gave up their lives just for our safety. Without them, we shouldn’t be here. So we should be thankful to them.

Every badges' story

Every badges' story

This week in Literacy, we have been learning about ANZAC Day. We had to get some things like maps, pictures of the soldiers that fought on the World War 1 and badges and we have to make a slideshow about it. We (Reuben, Riansha, and I) wrote about the three badges that came from the brave soldiers. I found it out hard when we were trying to find some answers to the unsolved problems. I found it out easy when we have to pick a picture. It was kind of hard, but I was proud because what I was doing is for the brave fallen soldiers and it was for ANZAC day!

We should Ban Plastic Bags!

Would you ever eat plastic? I know you don’t. Did you know that plastic
bags are made of PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) which is toxic? Plastics are
materials that are malleable and can be molded into solid objects like
Plastic Bottles and Plastic Bags.

It takes over 200-1000 years for the plastic bags to decompose. Also,
plastics can’t break apart because they are made of high-density
polyethylene (HDPE).

Animals are in danger too! Aquatic animals can swallow plastic and they
can die. Some bits of plastics can be sharp and it may touch the marine
animals and they’ll get injured.

A lot of energy is used in making plastics. They use non-renewable
resources. Experts in U.S.A explained that petroleum used in making
plastic bags in America would power 1.3 million cars.

Here are some facts about what plastic is causing us:
90% of bottles are not even recycled.
Over 8 million plastics are in our oceans.
Every minute takes 1 million plastics littered in the whole world.
Any plastic is brought to the Pacific Garbage Patch.
Over 100 million marine animals are killed each year due to plastic pieces in the
ocean.

We can help reduce plastic by;
- Use a metal bottle instead of a plastic bottle.
- Reuse your plastic bottles instead of throwing them to the bin.
- Say “No straw please” in cafes, KFC, etc. because straws in places cafes and
restaurants, are made of plastic too.
- Use a metal straw instead so you can still wash it and we can reduce plastic.
- Bring fabric bags instead of plastic bags when you’re going shopping.

Plastic bags are harmful, not just to us, but the animals and our environment.
I strongly insist to ban plastic bags!
