Explanation about Hokey Pokey

Hokey Pokey Explanation

Hokey Pokey is a sweet that is famous in New Zealand, because It’s an ice cream flavour and it is made
in New Zealand. The ice cream consists of plain vanilla ice cream with small frozen lumps of honeycomb
toffee (Hokey Pokey is the New Zealand term of honeycomb toffee).

Hokey Pokey was made in the 1950s. Why is it called Hokey Pokey? It was because it was named after
the song called “The Hokey Pokey”. Composer Al Tabor claimed that the name came from the London
ice cream vendors of his youth called “Hokey Pokey Men”.

How do you make Hokey Pokey? First get the stuff that you need.. Namely; Sugar, Baking Soda, Golden
Syrup, Baking Pan, Baking Paper, Saucepan, Spatula.

This is how you make hokey pokey:

• Pour ½ cup of sugar to the saucepan.
• Heat up your pan on a stove
• Put ¼ cup of golden syrup.
• Then pour in a little amount of water to make the mixture not so sticky. Let the mixture dissolve.
• When completely melted, set the timer for three minutes to let it cool.
• Next, while mixing the sugar, pour in 2 teaspoons of baking soda. You will see the mixture get puffy
• and thicker when the baking soda is added. When the mixture is melted, let it sit for about an hour
• and a half. Then when cool, you can eat it.

Gas will be formed. The scientific name for the gas that was formed when it was puffing, is called Carbon
Dioxide. Plants produce carbon dioxide.

How to make Hokey Pokey

How to Make Hokey Pokey

This week in Literacy, we learnt how to make Hokey Pokey. While Mrs. Jack was making the Hokey Pokey, we had to take notes. This is how you make hokey pokey;

Step 1:
Pour two half a cup of sugar in a pot and heat it in the stove.

Step 2:
Next, Pour some golden syrup into the pot.

Step 3:
Grab a spatula and stir. Set the timer for three minutes.

Step 4:
Pour 2 tsp (teaspoons) of baking soda into the mixture while mixing it. You will see that the mixture will turn thicker and will get puffy.

Step 5:
When the mixture is melted, let it sit for about an hour and a half.

Sea Turtles have existed since the Jurassic. They have been here for 150 Million years. They have survived through the challenges of the eons, and the dinosaurs. First, an adult female turtle lays its eggs in where she dug a hole to put the eggs there and protects them from threats. Its eggs feels leathery, and is sized and looks like white, ping-pong balls. Out of 1000 eggs being laid, roughly 20% will never hatch. Adults breed for 2 decades, which is 20 years. A small sea turtle can be about the size of your palm. Unfortunately, 50% who reach the surf will perish. 400 baby turtles reach the water. Along their way to the water, they face danger or threats, such as crabs, seagulls, raccoons, and debris (rubbish). A new host of predators such as; dolphins, sharks, sea birds, fishes, and mostly, killer whales, are also waiting for the sea turtles. Only 20 hatchlings (baby turtles) make it to the adult. After many years, they will grow in size. After approximately 2 decades of age, they will be old enough to breed. Of those that began from eggs in the beach, now less than -10% remain. Some turtles suffer with chemicals in the sea, which caused their survival rate drop to 1% or less, and that made the sea turtles overwhelmed. Now there are only seven remaining species of sea turtles; Loggerhead, Kemp’s Ridley, Olive Ridley, Hawksbill, Flatback, and Leatherback. Sea turtles are now endangered. There used to be millions of sea turtles in the world, but now there’s less than a million. That was a sad journey of growing up as a turtle since they suffer from many threats and they have to risk it just to make it to the adult, or just to survive. 4,600 - which means 90% - of turtles die each year.

I’m starting to learn about Science and change. This is what I
found out today. What new information can someone tell me?

Substance: Is the materials you need to make a product.

Product: Is the thing that you made with the substance.

Reactant/s: Two reactants can make a product

Chemical Reactions: The reaction that the chemicals
(substances) makes.

Example:

- Ice melting to water. If a physical change occurs, the physical
properties of a substance will change.

- Dry Ice mixed with water - Solid to gas

-To make oobleck - Mix cornstarch with water
